Visit to bivouac Cosimo Zappelli

The bivouac is located on the Alta Via 2 route, on the section leading from Chabodey to Passo Alto (trail marker AV2 – 5). Alta Via 2 between Col de la Crosatie and Col Haut Pas.
Travel time:

  • from the hamlet of Chabodey in La Salle (1,043 m) 3h
  • from Deffeyes Refuge (2,500 m) 2h30
  • from La Thuile (Loc. Promise 1,540 m) 6h35
  • from Col de la Crosatie (2,838 m) 1h15

The bivouac was built in 2021 by the Municipality of La Salle following the destruction of the bivouac in Loc. Promoud due to an avalanche.
The new Cosimo Zappelli bivouac is a wooden structure composed of prefabricated modular units.
It is dedicated to the mountaineer Cosimo Zappelli: a trained nurse, he worked as a mountain guide and ski instructor. He was a publicist, photographer, and collaborator with various publishing houses and disappeared in 1990 on Pic Gamba in the Mont Blanc massif. Zappelli’s mountain exploits began with numerous climbs in the Mont Blanc group, in partnership with Walter Bonatti. He participated in extra-European expeditions in Iran, on the Zagros Mountains, in Africa on Kilimanjaro, Ruwenzori, and Hoggar, in the former USSR on the Caucasus Mountains as well as in the Andes.

Access:
From Passo Alto: splendid view of the Rutor area, descent along the Alta Via 2 path without particular difficulty. Panoramic view of the Paramont and the central valley.
From Colle de la Crosatie: descent along a technical section (slightly exposed on rocks with safety ropes) then continues along the path without particular difficulty. View of Lake Lenteney, Mont Paramont, and the Mont Blanc range.

Equipment: 10 beds with mattresses, mattress covers, and blankets (sleeping bag strongly recommended), kitchenette for self-catering with personal stove (personal pots and utensils, not available in the bivouac), dining area with a 4-seat table, untreated captured water, electricity with photovoltaic panels, LED lighting.
Outside there is a wooden terrace.

It is forbidden to light fires outside and near the bivouac.
